Perched on a cliff in Capri, the Casa Malaparte was in turn a refuge, an artist's lair, a voluntary prison – a crossroads of destinies, from Tiberius to Godard. In this house-world, Krystian Lupa unfolds a haunted closed-door drama based on Malaparte's Kaputt and La Peau. Outside, war rages; inside, a seance invokes the ghosts of old Europe's ideologues. On a steep cliff in Capri stands the Casa Malaparte, a strange house built in 1937 by the Italian writer. It extends a long history of exiles on the island: before it, Tiberius's villa, then Axel Munthe's Casa San Michele; Henry James, Rilke, Cocteau, Gorky, Lenin, Picasso all passed through, fugitives seeking asylum. In 1963, Godard filmed Le Mépris there, with Fritz Lang and Brigitte Bardot on the white terrace from which Ulysses was supposed to glimpse Ithaca. A refuge, an artist's lair, a voluntary prison, an archetype of a house: Capri is a crossroads of destinies. It is this house-world that Krystian Lupa unfolds in Capri – L’Île des fugitifs, an opus magnum by a great visionary of the European stage, created in 2019 based on Curzio Malaparte's Kaputt and La Peau. An unclassifiable figure of the 20th century, who moved from fascism to communism, a hallucinated witness to the disasters of war, Malaparte blends reportage and fable, cruelty and intimacy in his books. His villa becomes the unique setting for a haunted closed-door drama, where Tiberius meets Godard. Outside, a war rages, its number unknown. Lupa calls it “the monster of Europe”: the hubris of those who wanted to remake man and the world, and left behind only ruins. Inside, fugitives read Homer, trying to escape the century. Led by a narrator who seems to speak from beyond the century, about twenty performers traverse the fragments of a constantly recomposed memory.
