Overview
In an English port, Enoch Arden, a former fisherman turned merchant sailor, marries Annie Lee, who was also courted by Philipp Ray. After seven happy years, poverty and illness settle in their home. To provide for his family, Enoch goes back to sea with his former captain.
The ship is wrecked, and he is presumed lost for ten years. When he finally manages to return to his homeland, he learns that Annie has remarried Philipp.
Enoch will only reveal his identity on his deathbed… The moving story of this sailor believed to be dead inspired Richard Strauss to compose magnificent, understated, and effective music.
