In 1957, Édouard Herriot, one of the most prominent figures of the Third Republic, is hospitalised and living his last days. He is still mayor of Lyon. He is an invalid and his health is declining. Long a figure of anticlericalism, he requests a visit from the Archbishop of Lyon. The nurse caring for Herriot is part of a study group on Ukrainian history. She is impressed by the statesman's stature, by the intellectual, by his writings, but she is obsessed by the trip Herriot made to Ukraine in 1933 during the Great Famine (Holodomor) at the invitation of Joseph Stalin, so that Herriot would praise collectivisation. She is joined by a journalist, also of Ukrainian origin, who helps her conduct an objective investigation: during this trip, Herriot's blindness was complete. Soviet Russia had become a morbid theatre where staging and sets concealed and made people forget terrible catastrophes. Like many of us, Edouard Herriot will fall victim to inattentional blindness of personal, political, and historical origin. He will never acknowledge his error.
