Musée d'Orsay

The Musée d'Orsay is a Parisian museum located in the 7th arrondissement, along the left bank of the Seine, overlooking the Édouard-Glissant promenade. It holds the status of a national museum in France. Inaugurated in 1986, it is housed in the former Gare d'Orsay, built by Victor Laloux from 1898 to 1900 and redeveloped into a museum by decision of President Valéry Giscard d'Estaing. Its collections showcase Western art from 1848 to 1914, in all its diversity: painting, sculpture, decorative arts, graphic art, photography, and architecture. It is one of the largest museums in Europe for this period.

The museum possesses the world's most important collection of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist paintings, with nearly 1,100 canvases in total out of more than 3,650 in its possession. The public can view masterpieces of painting and sculpture such as Le Déjeuner sur l'herbe and Olympia by Édouard Manet, a proof of La Petite Danseuse de quatorze ans by Degas, L'Origine du monde, Un enterrement à Ornans, L'Atelier du peintre by Courbet, Les Joueurs de cartes by Cézanne, or five paintings from Monet's "Rouen Cathedrals" series and Bal du moulin de la Galette by Renoir.

Monographic or thematic temporary exhibitions periodically focusing on an artist's work, a movement, or an art history question are often organised. An auditorium hosts diverse events, including concerts, cinema, shadow theatre, conferences and symposia, and shows specifically aimed at a young audience.

Since 2010, the Musée de l'Orangerie, located in the Tuileries Garden, has been affiliated with it.
