Overview
While opera performances were traditionally forbidden from the beginning of Lent, they provided a way to keep music resonating at Versailles, under the guise of religious celebration.
Drawing inspiration for these works from the solitude of Christ abandoned by his apostles, many composers thus contributed to the continuity of the court's musical life, despite the closed doors of the opera.
We will have the chance to welcome the wonderful baritone Edwin Crossley, for this last concert of the season, centred around Marc-Antoine Charpentier's Leçons de ténèbres.
