Munich, 1919. Germany emerges exhausted from the Great War, crushed by defeat and debt. In a makeshift cabaret, Master David Canetti tries to make an audience laugh, an audience seeking to forget. Alongside Kristin von Daltenbrunner, his new partner, he performs a clairvoyance act every evening that enjoys growing success. The audience wants to believe. One must hope. But something troubles David. Discreetly seated at the back of the room, a young man sometimes attends the show. His presence is enough to chill the clairvoyant, to block his visions, to silence his laughter. Who is this man? What does David's laughter hide? Victor Haïm weaves around this encounter a prophecy as beautiful as it is terrifying, that of an era on the brink, and of those who sense what no one yet wants to see.
