Nicknamed the “Spanish Mozart”, Arriaga composed his opera Los esclavos felices at the age of 14 upon arriving at the Conservatoire de Paris; only the Overture remains, a piece of rare elegance. Another youthful work, Puccini’s Adagetto, whose theme would be reused for his opera Edgar, already reveals a moving lyrical vein. With his ultimate orchestral work Mina, Elgar paints a tender portrait of his beloved dog in this miniature imbued with charm and lightness, while Caroline Shaw draws inspiration from the classical form of a Haydn quartet for Entr’acte, a graceful work punctuated by subtle and delightful dissonances. Finally, Max Richter plays with quotations and borrowings by reintroducing a very personal reinterpretation of Vivaldi. Fragments of The Four Seasons serve as raw material for a play of loops and micro-displacements within which the ear recognises the source work, then allows itself to be surprised by the infinitesimal drifts, changes of angles and perspectives.
