A New Year's concert where the celebration unfolds like a fan of characters. Haydn opens the moment, not without humour, with the “Farewell” Symphony. Behind the famous anecdote lies music of uncommon intensity where chiaroscuro and irony are held in balance. Richard Strauss's pages draw from a dazzling youth: a sense of contour, an elegance of line, and that unique way of making the winds sparkle. This refinement is echoed by Mieczys³aw Kar³owicz's Serenade for Strings, an unjustly forgotten Polish composer, where, for the duration of a waltz, a frankly romantic grandeur unfolds. Jacques Ibert's Divertissement, a work of wit and bite, will strongly contrast with this more sensitive vein. Finally, György Ligeti's Concert Românesc will close this first musical evening of the year with a stylised popular energy: dances, modal turns, bold colours, like a fireworks display held at arm's length.
