Destierro

Between 1974 and 1984, 3,500 Chilean dissidents took refuge in Ceau?escu's Romania. A poignant and little-known story of exile, which is also that of author and director Daniela Labbé Cabrera. Gathering the frayed threads of her own diaspora, she weaves a vibrant narrative, at the crossroads of fiction and documentary. From one dictatorship to another... Fleeing threats and persecutions, opponents of General Pinochet's regime found improbable asylum in the grey suburbs of Bucharest... Between struggle and discouragement, joys and survival, they reconstituted "a small Chilean village in Romania" there. It is their epic that Destierro tells, a fictional and documented journey, which focuses on the singular destinies of four characters caught in the whirlwind of 20th-century history. Among them, Anna, an activist, whose exile will profoundly change her destiny, and Nelson, who seeks to lead the revolutionary struggle from Europe. An epic narrative tinged with South American magical realism, supported by music played and sung on stage, a power of life and resistance.
