Every Friday evening, the Ménard family gathers at the bar-restaurant Au Père Tranquille, run in a suburb by the eldest son, Henri. But this particular evening is special: the other son, Philippe, has appeared on regional television, his wife Yolande is celebrating her thirty-fifth birthday, and Betty, the youngest, is trying to end her relationship with Denis, the waiter, while enduring reproaches from her mother, who doesn't understand why she isn't married yet. Everyone is preparing to continue the evening once Arlette, Henri's wife, returns. But she's late… As old resentments resurface, tensions steadily rise, leading to the advent of a new family order.
