After a somewhat wild youth, Doctor Moulineaux leads a quiet and respectable life with his wife Yvonne. But, caught up by his old demons, Moulineaux has spent the night away from home to meet the beautiful Suzanne Aubin, one of his patients, at the Opéra Ball.

This was ill-advised, because despite the clumsy diversions of his servant Étienne, Yvonne has discovered everything! To hide his new adulterous relationship from prying eyes, Moulineaux decides to rent a small mezzanine formerly occupied by a seamstress.

But his respite is short-lived.

No sooner has he settled in with his mistress than our respected doctor sees a succession of visitors, as eccentric as they are undesirable, arriving and threatening to expose the situation at any moment: a cuckolded husband, a mother-in-law, the landlord, the 'Queen of the Ice Floes', and former clients of the seamstress.

These intrusive nuisances will drag Moulineaux into a whirlwind of lies and stratagems aimed at preventing his adultery from coming to light. With cascading twists, fabrications, and incredible misunderstandings, the events unfold in this mythical Feydeau comedy at a frantic pace!
