Far from Moscow, everything unfolds on the estate of old Sorine, a retired magistrate. His nephew, young Constantin, lives there permanently. He is in love with a beautiful young woman, Nina, and dreams of literary glory.
But his mother, the famous actress Arkadina, who refuses to age, leaves him to languish in the countryside and without money. She lives the high life in the city, amidst hansom cabs and telephones, and drags the illustrious naturalist writer Trigorine everywhere with her.
Every summer, the couple comes to Sorine's to recuperate. But this summer, Constantin has written a symbolist dramatic poem, and Nina is to perform it. A makeshift theatre has been built in the park, and the show is about to begin.
