Lively, fast, unpredictable, Joan Tower’s Chamber Dance masterfully opens this programme. The American composer, true to her habit of managing compact forms, establishes an immediately palpable tension. Sections light up then fade, the pulse surfaces, and the orchestra seems to move as a single body. Beethoven’s Fourth Concerto then takes the listener by surprise. Magdalene Ho, who demonstrated her infinite knowledge of the piece at the Clara Haskil International Competition in 2023, will find an ideal ground here to combine the clarity of touch and the imagination of phrasing that earned her a particularly noted first prize. Finally, Schubert closes the evening with his Symphony No. 4, known as the “Tragic”, whose title aptly promises a chiaroscuro of supple gravity that gives full scope to melody.
