Carried by the wonderful Antje Weithaas, two pages by Beethoven place the violin in a special light. The Concerto op. 61, of unprecedented scope for its time, progresses with calm assurance. The soloist does not impose a discourse over the ensemble but circulates it, inflects it and broadens it. The celebrated German virtuoso will have the opportunity to demonstrate her consummate art of balance and management of grand phrases. Shorter, the Romance n°2 concentrates this same quality of line within a weightless, almost confidential cantilena, where the orchestra is reduced to the essential. Here we hear another side of Beethoven, made of restrained eloquence, which touches by its very simplicity. Haydn, finally, concludes the programme with Symphony n°99, which is part of the London series and deploys an art of orchestral theatre that is anything but decorative.
