About — The venue
The Basilique Saint-Sernin is the most important Catholic religious building in Toulouse, the capital of the Occitanie region. It is situated in the heart of the square of the same name. It is one of the largest Romanesque churches preserved in Europe, along with Speyer Cathedral in Germany and Santiago de Compostela Cathedral in Spain.
It was built at the end of the 11th century to house the relics of the first bishop of Toulouse, Saint Saturnin (Sarnin or Sernin in Occitan), one of the earliest and most revered Gallo-Roman Christian martyrs. In the mid-3rd century, Saturnin is believed to have led the first Christian community of ancient Tolosa. On 29th November 250, he was reportedly attacked by pagans at the foot of the Capitolium (the site of the current Place Étienne-Esquirol): having refused to sacrifice to Jupiter, he was allegedly tied to a bull and dragged along the cardo to the current location of the Notre-Dame du Taur church. Two young women, the “saintes Puelles”, are said to have buried the saint on the spot. The “discovery” of the saint's body by Bishop Hilaire in the 4th century, followed by the construction of a sanctuary by Bishops Silve and Exupère at the beginning of the following century, contributed to an initial devotion to the martyr. During the Middle Ages, with the development of the cult of saints, the sanctuary became one of the most important pilgrimage centres in medieval Western Europe, even as the city became an important stop for pilgrims on the Way of Saint James (Santiago de Compostela).
The importance of Saint-Sernin was felt, from the Middle Ages onwards, in the place it occupied in the power struggles that traversed the city, but also in its considerable influence on the growth and urban planning of Toulouse, and furthermore on the flourishing of the arts. The community of canons, established no later than the 9th century, formed the living heart of a powerful abbey that accumulated wealth through donations from the people of Toulouse and pilgrims, as well as through the exploitation of its numerous properties. It surrounded itself with many vassals and obtained the protection of powerful lords. The rivalry between the canons of Saint-Sernin Abbey and the other powers of the city – the Count of Toulouse then the King of France, and their representatives; the bishop and the chapter of Saint-Étienne Cathedral; the consuls and representatives of the city – were, in the Middle Ages, one of the most powerful dynamics of Toulouse and southern French politics. Simultaneously, the growth of the Saint-Sernin borough, which formed around the abbatial enclosure, was one of the key issues in the organisation and structure of the city of Toulouse in the Middle Ages.
Moreover, the construction project for the new church, launched at the end of the 11th century and lasting over a century, was not only a sign of the abbey's power but also a formidable engine for the development of Romanesque architecture, sculpture, and painting in the South of France. Its architectural plan makes it the archetype of large pilgrimage churches, where pilgrims can circulate to venerate relics without disturbing the mass being held in the nave. The basilica, which preserves 260 Romanesque capitals, remains one of the most beautiful testaments to southern Romanesque architecture.
