Abbaye Saint Victor

The Abbey of Saint-Victor in Paris was a former abbey of regular canons founded in the 12th century by Guillaume de Champeaux, archdeacon and director (scholasticus) of the cathedral school of Notre-Dame de Paris. Within a few decades, Saint-Victor became one of the most important centres of intellectual life in the medieval West, especially in the fields of theology and philosophy. Its influence shone through illustrious masters such as Hugues, Adam, André, Richard, and Thomas Gallus, who explored numerous fields of knowledge.

Suppressed in 1790, the abbey was demolished in 1811 and replaced, first by the wine market (halle aux vins), then, in the second half of the 20th century, by the Faculty of Sciences, and today by the sites of the Institut de Physique du Globe and Jussieu University.

The abbey's motto was: Jesus, Maria, sanctus Victor, sanctus Augustinus.
