Fondation Cartier pour l'art contemporain

The Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain was established in 1984 by Maison Cartier and its president Alain Dominique Perrin. It is a private institution entirely dedicated to contemporary art.

The Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain is a pioneer in several respects. It paved the way for a renewal of patronage in the French cultural landscape, opening the door for French luxury groups such as Kering or LVMH - Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton. It also offered an exhibition space to artists from around the world, avoiding an exclusive focus on European or American artists, and contributing to the recognition of creators such as Malick Sidibé, Chéri Samba,

Freddy Mamani, Huang Yong Ping, Sally Gabori, Olga de Amaral, Daidō Moriyama, Takeshi Kitano, Ron Mueck, etc.

The Fondation Cartier is an exhibition and creation space for artists, and a place for encounters with the public through the organisation of conferences, concerts, and performances in relation to temporary exhibitions.

Formerly located in Jouy-en-Josas (Yvelines), the Fondation Cartier has been situated, since 1994, in the Montparnasse district, at 261, boulevard Raspail, in Paris, in a building designed by the French architect Jean Nouvel, then, from late October 2025, between the Louvre and the Palais-Royal, in the building then known as the Louvre des antiquaires, due to its previous occupation.
