About — The venue
The Grand-Théâtre de Bordeaux is a neo-classical opera house.
Commissioned by Marshal de Richelieu and built by the architect Victor Louis, it was inaugurated on April 7, 1780, with a performance of Jean Racine's Athalie.
Listed as a historical monument in 1899, a reminiscence of Antiquity with its peristyle, this 88-metre by 47-metre neo-classical structure is part of Bordeaux's opulent urban planning inherited from the Age of Enlightenment. It houses an auditorium with a thousand seats, a perfect example of an Italian-style theatre.
After more than two hundred years of various uses and successive transformations of its halls and surroundings, it regained its original blue, gold, and white marble interior decoration during its last restoration in 1991, and its perspective as a temple of the muses with the development of Place de la Comédie and Cours du Chapeau-Rouge in 2006.
The Grand-Théâtre is now the home of the Opéra national de Bordeaux, which programs its opera season and ballets there. It also hosted the symphonic concerts of the Orchestre national Bordeaux Aquitaine before the opening of the Auditorium de Bordeaux in 2013.
