About — The venue
La Sauve-Majeure Abbey is a former Benedictine monastery (of the Order of Saint Benedict) located in the commune of La Sauve, in the Gironde department of Nouvelle-Aquitaine.
Founded in 1079 by the Duke of Aquitaine and Gérard de Corbie, it housed some 300 monks at its peak. Ruined and abandoned at the end of the 18th century, it was classified as a historical monument on the 1840 list. This initial protection was confirmed by an order published in the Official Journal in 1914, then by the protection of several plots of land containing the ruins. This ensemble has been classified as a historical monument since 12 April 1929. Finally, the lands omitted by previous orders were classified as historical monuments by order of 9 April 2002. Furthermore, the abbey was classified in December 1998 as a UNESCO World Heritage site as part of the Routes of Santiago de Compostela in France.
