About — The artist
Virgil Donati (born October 22, 1958, in Melbourne) is an Australian drummer of Italian descent.
He started playing drums at the age of 3 and played in his father's band until he was 6, then began taking lessons at 7.
He has played in the bands Soul SirkUs, Loose Change, On The Virg with the album Serious Young Insects, Planet X, CAB, as well as with Steve Vai and Allan Holdsworth. He is considered one of the greatest progressive rock drummers and is primarily known for his double bass drumming and his highly evolved and complex technique. Very versatile, his playing extends to Jazz-Rock, notably on the album "Just Add Water" with Scott Henderson.
In 2007, he toured with Michel Polnareff.
Currently, he continues to play with Billy Sheehan and Tony MacAlpine. The latter also participated in Michel Polnareff's tour.
Since 2024, he has been the drummer for the band Asia, reformed by Geoff Downes with John Mitchell and Harry Whitley, notably in the live album, Live in England recorded in 2025 and released in 2026.
Virgil Donati uses DW (Drum Workshop) drums, Sabian cymbals (HHX, Saturation, HH, and AA series), Vater drumsticks, and Remo drumheads.
