About — The artist
The Théâtre du Soleil is a theatre company founded in 1964 as a cooperative and participatory society (scop) by Ariane Mnouchkine, Philippe Léotard, Jean-Claude Penchenat, Roberto Moscoso, Françoise Tournafond and Claude Forget.
Mnouchkine created the troupe after attending Jacques Lecoq's classes. It was then a young cosmopolitan troupe which, in 1970, took up residence in the 12th arrondissement of Paris, in disused hangars that quickly became a new theatre venue: this place is the former Cartoucherie du Bois de Vincennes; "la Cartoucherie" then naturally established itself as the name and sign of the venue, where other companies soon came to settle.
Thus, the "Théâtre du Soleil" also refers to one of the theatre halls at la Cartoucherie, where this company is specifically housed.
