The Sisters of Mercy

The Sisters of Mercy [ðə ˈsɪstəz ə ˈmɜːsɪ] is a British gothic rock band, originating from Leeds, England. It was formed in 1980 by Andrew Eldritch and Gary Marx.

Andrew Eldritch states that the band's name was inspired by a Leonard Cohen song where the phrase “the sisters of mercy” would alternately refer to a religious order of the same name and to prostitutes. Another, more probable explanation [why?], exists regarding the origin of the band's name, which would be a reference to the Brontë sisters, writers from Leeds like the band. Highly influential in gothic circles, the band has nevertheless released only three albums in over 40 years of existence. A focus on sound and melody has always characterised their works. Their concerts are often described as an “experience,” including layers of thick smoke accompanied by lighting effects.

The Sisters of Mercy is strongly marked by the personality of Andrew Eldritch, the vocalist around whom the band's lineup has often changed. One of the formation's characteristics is having always used a drum machine named Doktor Avalanche. Present on all recordings and used at every concert, the instrument is considered a full-fledged entity of the band.

Highly independent and wanting to maintain artistic control of the band, Andrew Eldritch created Merciful Release, his own label, and even when he signed with major label WEA, he retained production, design, and artistic direction of the records within this collaboration, with WEA handling distribution and promotion of the band. He is one of the founders of the gothic style, recognised as such by unanimous critical acclaim, although he rejects the gothic label. His lyrics are often cynical, disillusioned, referencing various artists, philosophers, and historical events he appreciates.

Former members of Sisters of Mercy would later form the bands Ghost Dance and The Mission.
