Kool and the Gang (also spelled Kool & the Gang) is an American funk, disco, jazz, rhythm and blues, and pop group formed in Jersey City, New Jersey, in 1964.
The group was initially called The Jazziacs upon its creation, then changed names several times over a few years, successively becoming The Monikers, Soul Town Review, The New Dimensions, and Kool and the Flames, before adopting its definitive name in 1969.
A flagship group of the 1970s and 1980s, inspiring various subsequent musical trends, particularly rap and R'n'B, Kool and the Gang has sold over 70 million albums worldwide. Their most famous tracks include Ladies' Night (1979), Celebration (1980), Get Down on It (1981), Let's Go Dancin' (Ooh, La, La, La) (1982), Fresh (1984), and Cherish (1985).
