About — The artist
Franz Schubert ([fʁɑ̃t͡s ʃubɛʁ], German: [ˈfʁant͡s ˈʃuːbɐt]), born on 31 January 1797 in Lichtental (a suburb of Vienna) and died on 19 November 1828 in Vienna, was an Austrian composer.
An emblematic composer of German Romantic music, he is recognised as the undisputed master of the lied. He particularly devoted himself to chamber music, and also wrote numerous works for piano, around ten symphonies, as well as choral and sacred music.
Although he died prematurely at the age of 31, Schubert is one of the most prolific composers of the 19th century. The catalogue of his works includes over a thousand compositions, a significant portion of which was published after his death and revealed masterpieces that contributed to his posthumous fame.
