Claudio Monteverdi (baptised on 15 May 1567 in Cremona and died on 29 November 1643 in Venice) was an Italian composer.
His works, primarily vocal, are situated at the turning point between the Renaissance and the Baroque periods. Throughout his long life, he produced pieces belonging to both the old and new styles and brought significant changes to the style of his era. He is considered one of the creators of opera and, with L'Orfeo, the author of the genre's first masterpiece. He is also the last great representative of the Italian madrigal school, to which he dedicated nine Books, as well as the author of a body of polyphonic religious music, notably masses.
