About — The artist
Mariano Eusebio González y García, known as Luis Mariano, born on 13 August 1914 in Irun (Gipuzkoa province, Spain) and died on 14 July 1970 in Paris, was a Spanish Basque tenor and operetta singer who achieved immense popularity in Spanish-speaking and French-speaking countries. In addition to Spanish and French, he was fluent in Basque, his mother tongue, and was always proud of his Basque origins.
He rose to fame in 1945 thanks to La Belle de Cadix, an operetta by Francis Lopez, and also Le Chanteur de Mexico. He then became, both on stage and on the big screen, the "prince of operetta".
