About — The artist
Les Go de Kotéba, also known as Les trois Go, is a group of singers and dancers created in 1993 in Abidjan under the impetus of Souleymane Koly.
Les Go sing in Malinké, Bété, Songhaï, Bambara, Khassonké, Nouchi, or French.
It was originally a trio. The members are Niama Kanté, Maaté Keïta, and Awa Sangho, respectively Guinean, Ivorian-Guinean, and Malian. The group was reduced to a duo with the departure of Niama Kanté for Japan.
From 2011, Awa Sangho pursued a solo career in New York, releasing the album Ala Ta in 2016.
The group's name comes from Go – a Nouchi deformation of “girl” – and the Kotéba d'Abidjan ensemble, a traditional Mandingo theatre troupe founded in 1974 by Souleymane Koly. Traditional Kotéba is a satirical theatrical genre, sung and danced, of Malian origin. The Bambara terms: koté meaning “snail” and ba meaning “big” refer to a traditional spiral staging in Kotéba. Souleymane Koly also emphasised in 2013 that “ko o tè ban” means “nothing will ever end,” in other words, no truth is absolute. He also recalled that the three Go were an integral part of the Kotéba d'Abidjan ensemble while pursuing their specific singing career.
