About — The artist
Jean Ferrat (stage name of Jean Tenenbaum), born on 26 December 1930 in Vaucresson (Seine-et-Oise) and died on 13 March 2010 in Aubenas (Ardèche), was a French singer-songwriter. A writer of lyrical songs, he alternated throughout his career between sentimental songs, poetic songs, and politically engaged songs, often facing censorship. Recognised for his talent as a melodist, he set to music and popularised many poems by Louis Aragon, from whom he had obtained approval.
A fellow traveller of the French Communist Party, he nevertheless distanced himself from it on various subjects.
Although he had little media presence and retired from the stage at the age of 42, this ardent defender of French chanson achieved great critical and popular success. Appreciated by a wide audience, Jean Ferrat is considered, like Léo Ferré, Georges Brassens, and Jacques Brel, as one of the great names of French chanson.
