Jamiroquai (pronounced: [dʒəˈmɪɹəkwaɪ]) is a British acid jazz and funk band, originally from London, England. Led by singer Jay Kay, the band established itself in the capital in the early 1990s, amidst the burgeoning acid jazz movement. Jamiroquai quickly stood out among the groups of the era (Incognito, Brand New Heavies, Galliano, or Corduroy (en)). The band gained worldwide fame while evolving its music. They have released eight studio albums throughout their career, the latest of which is Automaton, released in 2017.
The name Jamiroquai is a portmanteau: “jam” is a jazz term referring to musical improvisation, and “iroquai” refers to a Native American tribe, the Iroquois.
