About — The artist
George Gershwin, pseudonym of Jacob Gershowitz, was an American composer and conductor, born on September 26, 1898, in Brooklyn (New York) and died on July 11, 1937, in Los Angeles (California).
Born in New York into a working-class Jewish family originally from Saint Petersburg, George Gershwin began his career as an orchestra pianist on Broadway. His brother, Israel, known as “Ira,” a lyricist, wrote most of the texts for his songs, which were soon snapped up by Al Jolson, Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers, and producer Florenz Ziegfeld. Creator of symphonic jazz, he achieved triumph with his musical comedies. In 1924, he composed Rhapsody in Blue. In New York, on March 7, 1928, he met Maurice Ravel. In Vienna, he befriended Alban Berg. A true star, associating with famous women of his time (Paulette Goddard, Simone Simon), and a friend of Arnold Schönberg, he settled in Hollywood to compose film scores and popular songs. Many of his works have become great jazz standards, thanks in particular to Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, Herbie Hancock, and many other singers and actors. He died at the age of 38 from a brain tumour.
