About — The artist
Constantinople is a Quebec-based musical ensemble performing World Music, Early Music, and Baroque Music, founded and directed since 2001 by Kiya Tabassian in Montreal.
In its creations, Constantinople collaborates with renowned musicians such as Kayhan Kalhor, Ablaye Cissoko, Ghalia Benali, Françoise Atlan, Hana Blažíková (en), Shashank Subramanyam (en), and Marco Beasley.
Constantinople produces three or four new creations each year and travels to collaborate with the best musicians according to project needs. These creations form the regular season presented in Montreal, Quebec City, Ottawa, and Toronto. The creations are then presented during tours elsewhere in Canada and internationally. Some creations are also recorded. Over the years, Constantinople has developed nearly 60 creations, 23 of which have been recorded, and has travelled to over 290 cities across 57 countries.
Two of its most recent creations are Traversées, with Ablaye Cissoko, and Chants d'Espoir with Kayhan Kalhor.
In 2024, the Constantinople ensemble won the JUNO Award for Classical Album of the Year (Small Ensemble) for the album Il Ponte di Leonardo.
