About — The artist
Carla Bley is the stage name of Lovella May Borg, born on 11 May 1936 in Oakland, California, and who died on 17 October 2023 in Willow, New York. She was an American jazz pianist, organist, composer, and bandleader.
A musician with an unclassifiable style, Carla Bley is an important figure in post-bop jazz. She wrote the jazz opera Escalator over the Hill in the late 1960s. After writing extensively for her big band, she gained confidence in her piano playing throughout the 1990s, eventually dedicating herself more to her trio with saxophonist Andy Sheppard and her partner, bassist Steve Swallow.
She also worked with pop artists such as Linda Ronstadt, and rock artists like Jack Bruce, Robert Wyatt, and Nick Mason.
