About — The artist
Giacomo Carissimi was an Italian composer, baptised in Marino, near Rome, on 18 April 1605 and who died in Rome on 12 January 1674.
He is one of the most eminent composers of the Baroque period and one of the main representatives of the Roman School.
He is also one of the first composers to have created the genre of oratorio (called dialoghi (dialogues) before 1640).
Little is known about his life, and only the most important events are certain. For his heirs, he remains the greatest composer of the 17th century, “the greatest composer Italy has produced” according to Pierre Bourdelot and Pierre Bonnet in 1715.
