Alain Chabat

Alain Chabat is a French actor, director, screenwriter, producer, comedian, and television presenter, born on 24 November 1958 in Oran (then in French Algeria).

He rose to prominence on Canal+ as a member of the comedy group Les Nuls, subsequently becoming a leading figure in French cinematic comedy.

As an actor, he has achieved several successes, primarily in the comedic genre. In addition to his own films, he has notably starred in La Cité de la peur (1994), Gazon maudit (1995), Le Goût des autres (2001), Chouchou (2003), Ils se marièrent et eurent beaucoup d'enfants (2004), Prête-moi ta main (2006), La Personne aux deux personnes (2008), Les Gamins (2013), and Incroyable mais vrai (2022).

Although specialising in comedy, he has also appeared in dramatic films such as Le Cousin (1997) and L'Amour ouf (2024). He has also worked twice under the direction of Michel Gondry: La Science des rêves (2006) and L'Écume des jours (2013). He has also played minor roles in two major productions: Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian (2009) and Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets (2017). Less frequently seen in television fiction, he has appeared, for example, in the series Kaamelott (2007) and En place (2024).

Nominated three times for the César Award for Best Actor and twice for Best Supporting Actor, he won the latter in 2025 for L'Amour ouf.

Furthermore, he has established himself as a leading comedic screenwriter and director: first with Didier (1997), which won the César Award for Best First Feature Film in 1998, then the immense commercial success Astérix et Obélix : Mission Cléopâtre (2002), which achieved one of the best box office results in French history. Following the failure of RRRrrrr!!! (2004), he became less prolific. He subsequently directed two films primarily aimed at a young audience: Sur la piste du Marsupilami (2012) and Santa et Cie (2017). He later returned to the world of comic books by directing the 3D animated mini-series Astérix et Obélix : Le Combat des chefs (2025) for Netflix.

For television, he developed the animated series Avez-vous déjà vu..? (2006) — for which he also provided voices — and, most notably, created, produced, and hosted the television game show Burger Quiz which, after a first season aired on Canal+ in 2001, returned to TMC between 2018 and 2020. He also hosted a late-night show in 2022 on TF1, Le Late avec Alain Chabat.
