With Endemic, Patricia Erbelding offers a painting that seems to take root in a territory without ever seeking to represent it. Her works evoke less an identifiable landscape than a world in the process of growing, where matter, like plants, obeys its own forces, rhythms, and transformations. The term, borrowed from botanical vocabulary, designates what intimately belongs to a place: a plant, a life form that does not develop anywhere else in the same way. This notion of anchoring runs through the exhibition. The works seem to emerge from an invisible soil, branching out, spreading, disappearing then reappearing, like so many plant forms whose growth would be subterranean. In Endemic, this plant dimension allows us to look differently at the signs that populate her work. The lines, ramifications, strata, and networks can evoke roots as well as branches, veins, seeds, or circulatory systems. They do not constitute a repertoire of natural forms but rather a writing of growth. The tree, which occupies an important place in the artist's recent research, becomes an essential figure in this respect: a structure of life as much as a structure of thought, it simultaneously embodies growth, circulation, vulnerability, and resistance. But in Erbelding's work, the plant is never separated from the mineral. Roots plunge into strata, forms are built by successive deposits, surfaces bear the traces of a slow history. The work thus becomes an intermediate space, between earth and vegetation, depth and emergence, memory and appearance. Endemic could then be understood as an imaginary inventory of species that exist nowhere else: forms born from an inner territory, each bearing the traces of its own development.
