If you're not yet familiar with Lowertown – the enigmatic group comprising Olivia Osby and Avsha Weinberg – now is the perfect time to discover them. It took a few years for this New York duo to catch their breath: after teetering on the brink of collapse for years due to conflicts with their record label, creative frustrations, and an unhealthy attachment to their artistic partnership, the band needed a fresh start. Their new album, *Ugly Duckling Union* – set to be released on May 22nd via Summer Shade – opens with a serene sigh from Osby, a symbolic moment that sets the stage for their most thoughtful, uninhibited, catchy, and eccentric collection of songs to date. Ugly Duckling Union is a concept album inspired by the band's lived experiences, having created a community through their music. Dale, the main character of Duckling, and his companions unite to defeat LBH, a tyrannical media group determined to divide and isolate people in its quest for power. The physical edition of the album includes a booklet brimming with stories and comic strips illustrated by Doctor Nowhere (Silias Orion). Beyond that, fans can immerse themselves even further with plush toys and a playable Minecraft world inspired by Ugly Duckling Union. Inspired by the conceptual creativity of bands like Gorillaz and the emphasis on collective concert experiences by Fugazi, Lowertown merges online and physical fan communities into a complete experience. Lowertown may be best known for its poignant reflections on youthful melancholy, always captured with biting honesty. But on Ugly Duckling Union, this angst is filtered through a more mature, detached, and humorous lens. Weinberg describes their previous lyrics
