In the 19th century, Felix Mendelssohn played a decisive role in the rediscovery of Johann Sebastian Bach's work, deeply admiring his mastery of counterpoint, the balance of his forms, and his spiritual power. This artistic lineage profoundly marked Mendelssohn's musical language and nourished a large part of his sacred output. By juxtaposing works by Bach and Mendelssohn, this programme reveals the fruitful dialogue between two eras of German musical history. Alongside the cantatas and choruses of the Cantor of Leipzig resonate the motets and sacred works of his Romantic heir, where the rigour of Baroque writing combines with a new sensibility. A meeting between tradition and renewal, driven by a shared quest for spiritual elevation and musical beauty.
