A jewel of Molière's theatre! Arnolphe, a grotesque figure of dominating patriarchy, attempts to create the perfect wife by keeping Agnès in ignorance. He is a paranoid guardian, a man consumed by the fear of being deceived, who strives to impose his archaic vision of male superiority. But the mechanism turns against him. The biter is bit. Agnès, beneath her apparent naivety, awakens to freedom. What her guardian imagines to be a catechism of submission becomes, for her, a revelation of the coarseness of oppressive mechanisms. She questions prohibitions, dares to say no, dares to love through her encounter with Horace; she moves from shadow to light, discovering her dignity and her power of self-affirmation.
