The artistic muse of a joyful protest by Egyptian youth, Mahraganat urban music and dances are the festive expression of a cultural and political rebellion.

In Just One Tile, Islam Elarabi evokes the intimate and collective energies that swept through the people clamouring for their thirst for freedom in Tahrir Square.

The choreographer and dancer, who trained in Cairo, injects the spirit of contemporary dance into an intense manifestation of joy, fear, fury, and hope, reliving the emotions of the Egyptian revolution.

Mahraganat, also called electro chaâbi, inseparable from the popular and democratic movement, consists of sensual dances frowned upon by authorities and songs banned from the radio due to their rhythms (electro, rap, reggaeton) and suggestive lyrics.

But Islam Elarabi evokes the dramatic nature of the 2011 events and demonstrates how in Egypt, the smallest space can transform into a stage for dance. His dance balances between heroism, commitment, and fragility, like a universal metaphor for emancipatory popular movements.
