477 Joseph Swensen, Shizue, concerto for shakuhachi and orchestra Tōru Takemitsu, Requiem pour cordes Gabriel Fauré, Requiem In 2005, Japanese conductor Seiji Ozawa led a historic concert in Hiroshima, sixty years after the bombings.
Fauré's Requiem was at the heart of the programme, like a soothing balm on the open wound of grief.
Ten years earlier, Joseph Swensen composed Shizue, a concerto for shakuhachi flute which he dedicated to his aunt, a direct victim of the tragedy that plunged an entire country into chaos.
This concert is therefore a double tribute: a plea against oblivion and a promise to make peace with our ghosts.
