In recent years, Glasgow has established itself as a true hotbed of jazz. alto, the band led by the talented composer and multi-instrumentalist Liam Shortall.
Live, Shortall mesmerises the audience with his keyboards while switching with disconcerting virtuosity from guitar to bass, then to trombone. Their debut album, Bad With Names (2023), offers an accessible sound but hides a multitude of subtle tempo variations beneath the surface.
The band excels at weaving diverse styles – hip-hop, broken beat, dub, and punk – into the fabric of jazz. The result is an enchanting fusion that pushes the boundaries of contemporary jazz.
