Chinese American Bear is a Chinese-American duo based in Seattle, formed by married musicians Anne Tong and Bryce Barsten. Their project was born during lockdown, when Barsten began composing and Tong initially helped him as a “support partner” by teaching him a little Chinese.
Gradually, her voice became essential to the project, giving rise to a unique indie pop blending sweetness, nostalgia, and humour. Their music combines influences ranging from The Flaming Lips to The Beach Boys or the Bee Gees, with bright synths and joyful pop energy.
The lyrics, often sung in Chinese by Tong, evoke food, childhood memories, and Chinese-American culture, creating a warm and accessible universe.
Having arrived in the United States as a child, Tong long had a complex relationship with her native language, but singing in Chinese has become a way to reaffirm it and offer positive representation to many listeners in the Asian diaspora.
The band released a self-produced debut album, Chinese American Bear, in 2022, before joining the Moshi Moshi Records label for the album Wah!!! in 2024. Their third album, Dim Sum & Then Some, is expected in May 2026.
On stage, their concerts are known for their playful and quirky energy, with mascots, backing singers, and an almost childlike atmosphere, transforming their shows into true pop parties.
