During a family meal, to which his friends the Landernaus are also invited, Pacarel announces that he wishes to produce an opera composed by his daughter. He wants to sign a contract with a famous tenor from Bordeaux. The first misunderstanding occurs with the arrival of a young man from Bordeaux, the son of his friend Dufausset, who has come to Paris to study law. Pacarel, mistaking him for the expected tenor, makes the young man sign a contract… who then falls for Pacarel's wife, taking her for Dr Landernau's wife… Among other misunderstandings, twists and revelations!
