Overview
Gurshad Shaheman returns to the Théâtre de la Bastille with Cabaret Téhéran, summoning the flamboyant voices of Iranian pop culture from the 1950s to the present day, in the grand tradition of transformist cabaret.
Through a gallery of mythical singers he embodies alone on stage, Gurshad Shaheman blends cult songs, fragments of history, and autobiographical insights to evoke a free and sensual Tehran, brutally swept away by the 1979 revolution and the establishment of the Islamic regime.
True to his writing, which intersects the intimate and the political, Gurshad Shaheman transforms the stage into a space of reappearance and reappropriation. His body metamorphoses, traversed by the ghosts of a forbidden culture.
And, masterfully wielding joyful celebration, he transforms the stage into a contagious burst of freedom.
