Triptyque d'Orgue Plain-Chant et Pages d'Orgue

Presented by Musique Sacrée Cathédrale De Nantes The alternation of plainchant with organ improvisations inspired by it is a French tradition dating back several centuries.

Already in the 17th century, organ books composed by organ masters consisted of a series of contrasting pieces, stemming from these improvisations but also serving as their support. It is in this vein that de Grigny composed his mass and his five hymns for organ.

Much later, Duruflé took up the torch, rediscovering ancient French organ music.

A student of Dukas, influenced by the post-symphonism of Ravel or Tournemire, he was deeply marked, like the latter, by Gregorian chant, as evidenced by his subtle triptych on the « Veni Creator  » as well as his famous Requiem.

Olivier Latry also revives this practice in his « Salve Regina  », his only written work to date, which constitutes a magnificent testament to his liturgical improvisations at Notre-Dame-de-Paris, particularly his alternated vespers verses, as a worthy heir to this French tradition.
