This Requiem is one of the most emblematic musical works of Western culture. At the age of 35, Mozart was exhausted and ill.
Perhaps, following a strange commission, he wrote the Requiem for his own passing, which he knew was near: He died while writing measure number 8 of the Lacrimosa. These moving circumstances give the Requiem a particular and pathetic depth.
