In a few words
Neapolitan Porpora was one of the leading composers of the Baroque period and Handel's main rival on the London stage, each at the head of his own theatre, the Royal Academy for Handel and the Opera of the Nobility for Porpora. Master of castrati Farinelli, Caffarelli and Porporino, and close to Senesino, these star performers contributed greatly to his success in England… But they would also ruin him with their demands for exorbitant fees. Mitridate is the last opera he wrote for London, based on Racine's eponymous tragedy, with a stellar cast (including Senesino and Farinelli). While the version composed by the young Mozart a few years later is well-known, it is also urgent to (re)discover this masterpiece of the Neapolitan school.
