Julien Vella and the Groupe Caute bring Robert Musil’s monumental and unfinished novel, L’Homme sans qualités, to the stage.

Robert Musil’s The Man Without Qualities was published in two parts, in 1930 and 1932.

In this immense and unfinished work, the Austrian author ironically examines the decline of the semi-fictional Kakanian Empire at the dawn of the 20th century, and through it, the inevitable failure of European culture on the eve of the First World War.

Julien Vella and the Groupe Caute have decided to bring this monumental novel to the stage, prioritising the questions that permeate it over the plot: how to live in an era of profit, nationalism, and wars?

How can a young generation defy cynicism and nostalgia to invent its own language and resist the decay that threatens?

Like the book, which blends registers — satire, narrative, essay, scholarly prose, and wild metaphysics — they bring together fragments of songs, dance, clown acts, pantomime, and stand-up in a series of tableaux. And like the novel, they stubbornly refuse to conclude.

What is at stake here is not the end of a world, but a resolute attempt to bring another into being.

Between irony and fervour, disaster and desire, the stage becomes a living laboratory where history, far from being over, is being written before our eyes — and invites us to take part.
